Viral Video Resignation One-Upped by Former Employer

Marina Shifrin was a disgruntled 25-year old animator at the graphic company Next Media Animation in Thailand. After two years of working there, she decided to say “I quit” – via YouTube. Her epic video resignation has gone viral with over 8 million views in the first five days, and counting. She dances through most of the video to Kanye West’s ‘Gone’ and vents her feelings through on screen text. She dances interpretively around her office complex on desks, bathroom stalls and recording cubicles at 4:30 in the morning.

“I work for an awesome company that makes news videos. I have put my entire life into this job, but my boss only cares about quantity, how fast we write and how many views each video gets”

Sounded like that’s exactly what a boss creating news videos for the Internet should be focused on to me. It was a cute video — creative, well executed, and the kind of fodder the Internet goes crazy for. But I was underwelmed. Marina also had a glaring typographical error in her video – not cool for someone working on the news.

Marina is clearly frustrated, and the job may not have been a good fit for her. Working in a fast pace news environment on tedious animation is sure to be demanding. You can read my thoughts on why it is good to have a tough boss here: ‘5 Reasons Why You Should Want A Tough Boss‘. But some people just can’t handle the pressure. She vented her woes creatively, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but she may also have burned her bridges. I read that she plans on going into comedy. If that’s true, I think she’ll be perfect for it, and what a great way to launch a new career. Best wishes, Marina!

I was more than mildly amused and validated, when the video received a response from Next Media. In the video, her former colleagues, and boss also dance interpretively to Kanye’s ‘Gone’. They clearly show that they weren’t exactly sad to see her go, and advertise that they are hiring. Great comeback!
